Title: My Music Magazine
Image- pic of front cover, double page
spread and contents page-
When making my Hip Hop music magazine I
tried to tick to the rules and conventions, XXL and Vibe hip hop music magazine
not only gave e guidance but inspiration.

Title: front cover
Image-my front cover-
I chose for my model to wear a peach cultured
skintight dress to stand out against the grey backdrop and outline her figure. I
highlighted this by using the three point lighting. I wanted her to wear this
because I felt it was sophisticated (as it didn’t show too much skin but still
enough to look sexy), feminine (as it showed her curves and the color is linked
to females as well as pink being a feminine color). I wanted these messages to
come the reader’s head when looking as it’s about women empowerment without the
female being sexualized. The way she is dressed look some what formal giving
her status and authority because I feel the way a female hip hop artist dress
has no positive connotations they will either be labeled as “ratchet” or a
“slut” so that is why the way I dressed my model is not the typical female hip
hop artist. I also insured that my model
wore a full face of makeup to enhance her natural beauty also I didn’t have to
photo shop as that could sometimes look fake and unrealistic and show girls and
guys what a real bodies and face looks like. I feel like the way I portrayed my
cover star allows many young women to look up to her.
I also ensured that my mode was looking
directly into the camera lenses to create a direct mode of address as it makes
it more personal.
I feel as though the only way to convey my
message was through a long shot much like XXL.
Another connotation of a Hip Hop music
magazine I have used is the three color scheme as using too many colors can be
distracting so it’s harder for the reader to focus on the cover lines. I used
the color scheme of gold, pink and black. The color scheme that Hip Hop
magazines normally use is red black and white as these are bold unisex colors
my Vibe case study used this while XXL used black white and blue. The reason
why I wasn’t completely traditional was because if all Hip Hop magazine stick
to the same rules they all look alike and don’t stand out.
To make my magazine look as real as
possible I had to include a masthead, barcode (in the bottom corner) and date
as these are not only conventions of Hip Hop magazine but all magazines so it
was very important to do this. I
manipulated my masthead to look like my cover star is in front of it. XXL does
this and it doesn’t affect their demand because their mast head is so distinct
and recognizable also they are established company so even if you cover up some
of the masthead customers will recognize that it is XXL. My other case study
-Vibe-does not do this. By doing this it allows a longer sky line also it
allows the cover lines to be mirrored with the image in the middle of them
both.
I have also listed the cover lines and the
main cover line is in a bigger font however they are all in the same font. I
used this convention because it makes the magazine look more organize so is
appealing to the oculesics.
Slide 4

page
Slide 5
Much like my two case studies my contents
page links with my front cover not only in terms in content but the color
scheme as well as both having the masthead. The layout of my condense page was
much like XXL as I also had two sides one labeled side A and one labeled side B
and side a had all the features on it while side B had all the regular
articles. Like XXL my articles are on the edge of the pages. (Use images side
by side)
The
font for the main feature is bigger and in a different color to make it obvious
to the reader that that article is the main feature at the top of the list
The articles go in order of the page
number, the smaller one first. Furthermore the page numbers are on the images
on side B.
Slide 6
Image - my double page spread with my case
studies double page spread-
Slide 7
To start the article I used a drop cap
which is typical for a magazine to do. (Image of case studies drop cap next to mine).
XXL use a drop cap and so does vibe in these articles. Not only is a drop cap a
decorative but it is used to mark the start of an article.
Like vibe I have a picture of the artist on
the left hand side of the page with a pull quote.
My text is in columns as it is commons it also
allows me to fit more content in. However my first case study (XXL) does not do
this, instead it raps around the images. My second case study (vibe) they
didn’t do this.
When creating the double page spread I made
sure that there was a clear difference between the questions asked and the answer.
I did this by making the questions bold and putting the questions above the
answer. Both of my case studies did this.
In addition to this my article has an intro
about the artist and her background and an outro about her concert time and all
her social media accounts. By using social media I am connecting it to my
target audience as they will have many social network sites.
Question
2
Slide one-intro
In my magazine the social group that has
been represented is young people in full time education/ part time education
with black afro/ Caribbean background.
Slide two- occupation/ family income
The social group that I have characterized
come from a working class they are likely to have a job title like a sales assistant
in a clothing or shoe store. The family of the social group I am representing
earn above minimum wage and are likely to work in the tertiary sector.
Slide three- gender
I will use both genders in my music
magazine however I will portray women more as my target audience is women. My
magazine will show case other aspects of women rather than just being eye candy
for example their creativity or intellect. My magazine represents strong
powerful women.
Slide four- ethnicity
My magazine features people mainly from
afro/ Caribbean decent as they are seen as typical hip hop artist they are also
seen as naturally talented musically. They are seen as people who have
struggled a lot so to see them being successful is inspirational.
Slide five-location
The location I used for my music magazine
is London in the UK. The majority of people who I used in my magazine were from
Woodford green. It is part of the
suburb of Woodford in North
East London. Although Woodford green has never had a
bad reputation (as the home of Winston Churchill and the few altercations) it
has been seen as old fashion so women often stay home while husbands work so my
magazine represents the working women and gives power to them.
Slide six-genre
In the genre of hip hop and grime it is
represented negatively as some view it as violent however my magazine will
represent it in a positive light highlighting the struggle, the hurt from the
anger.
Slide seven- Clothing
The models in my magazine will dress casual
so it doesn’t cast out a age group that is within my targeted audience age
range (16-22) however they will be dressed stylish in the trendy looks to
represent that age bracket. For example the model for the front cover wore a
tight fitted dress which would appeal and represent my target audience as girls
as young as 16 wear clothing such as her.
Slide eight – Back stories
On my double page spread I included a back
story this represents all new artist who had found who are trying to become
established as well as those who try to prove them-self for whatever reason.
Slide nine- overall representation
My magazine represent young people of
colour who have struggled in life but are trying to succeed and prove people
wrong. I have flipped the negative connotations of the social group that I
represent showing them to be hard working, talented
Question 3
I
would want Townsquare Media to publish my magazine in the future as they
already publish 3 Other Hip Hop music magazines, which are all well known and
established (KING, XXL, Boombox). This shows that they understand what they are
doing and how to increase sales because they have so much experience (It was
established in by Terry Jacobs in 1994).
It is an
American company based in Greenwich, Connecticut.
Publications
- Antenna – general
publication aimed towards young readers
- The Boombox – dedicated
to hip hop music
- The Boot – dedicated to
country music
- Comics Alliance– dedicated to
comic books
- Just Jared – dedicated
to pop culture
- king– marketed toward
African American men
- Hype Machine – aggregator of music blogs
- Loudwire– dedicated to
heavy metal and rock music
- noisecreep – dedicated to
heavy metal and rock music
- PopCrush – dedicated
to pop music
- ScreenCrush – dedicated to film
and television
- Taste of Country – dedicated
to country music
- Ultimate Classic
Rock –
dedicated to rock music categorized as classic
- XXL– dedicated to hip
hop
From the list of publications we can
see that Townsquare Media does not only specialize in Hip Hop, they also cover
the Rock, Pop, and Country genres. I feel they publish magazines like mine so
my content will fit. Because they publicize so much they are a not a niche
business but mass and are experienced with different fields/ genre of
magazines. However I will be based in England so I will only use this when I
feel like I have grown and become established in England and if I then want to
expand globally I will use them.
While in the UK I would like my
magazine to be published by Bauer (EMap). They publish magazines like
“Q”,”Karrang” and “heat”. These magazines magazines are well know in the uk, you can find them in many shops one for example is WHSmith.
It was founded in 1947, this shows
they have experience as they have been in the industry for a long time, accumulating
a net worth of 16.1 million which shows that they are successful so they know
what they are doing and what works. Their target audience similar to mine (age
range 16-36) so they will be able to help with the development of the magazine.
Question 4
My target audience is:
My target audience is:
Age: 20, I chose this age because at this age they are still young so are very impressionable also seeing successful people would motivate them to peruse their dreams and goals.
Career: Hairdresser/ Rapper
Annual Income:$23,120($45,840)/N/A
Magazine: Hip Hop and Fashion
Guru: Nicky Minaj/ Drake
Level of Education: Degree/ High school graduate
Ethnicity: African American
Location: Kingston Massachusetts
Amount of children: 0
Relationship Status: Single
However I feel that the audience that my magazine attracts is mostly female.
Question five
slide one I tried to attracted my audience in many different ways through my cover page, contents page and double page spread. The main way i attracted my audience was through the genre of my music magazine-Hip Hop which has a sub genre of grime.
slide two
image of front cover
slide three fc
masthead- I attracted my audience with the colours of my masthead pink and gold. The pink attracted mostly girls as in the production of my masthead many more girls prefer pink and gold than boys, they picked gold and black. As my target audience was girls i went with pink and gold. The gold is a gender neutral colour and is a bold bright colour so attracts boys too.
model- I made my model dress classy which gravitate people of that kind or people who aspire to be like that to my magazine. "she doesn't look like the typical girl that would be on a Hip Hop magazine" some may see this as a negative comment however negative or not it still attracted the person to my magazine.
direct mode of address-has made the reader feel like she is looking at them, making it feel more personal.
cover lines- My cover lines are artists that do Hip Hop which will attract my targeted audience of hip hop lovers.
consistency- My colour scheme and font are consistent this made my magazine more attractive as it looks more organised and structured.
slide four
image of contents page
slide five cp
font- I kept the font the same throughout the contents page, it is also the same as the cover page this makes the theme of the magazine the same and flows throughout. This means that the audience will be able to tell a difference from when the font changes, which could also highlight the articles significance.
images- I have been criticised on one of the images (top left side B) as not all the models are making a direct mode of address. this drew the readers attention. And the quality of it is not as good as the other pictures.
models- I had a variety of shot types to make it more interesting which also attracted the audience. I made sure that they were dressed like conventional Hip Hop artist. I also used people who look well put together. this attracted many boys as did girls.
numbers- Not all the page numbers (on side B) are on the images (some are next to them) this attracted my readers are they are Hip Hop lovers so would read Hip Hop music magazines which normally have the page numbers on the images, for example XXL.
slide six
image of double page spread
slide seven dps
image- The audience was drawn to the darkness of the image.
font- The artist name is in a different colour then the rest of the article which attracted the audience especially as it was in a bigger font. The audience felt like the light colour font brightened the image up as made it easier to see rather than a black font.
layout- the audience felt as if the layout was organised and orderly so it is easier to read.
colour scheme- The colour scheme was kept throughout the front cover, contents page and double page spread
Numbers- The numbers at the bottom of the page are not what Hip Hop magazines normally have as it has a pink border around it which make sit stand out. It also links it to that artist as my contents page do not have the boarder.

Question 7
front cover
I have learnt how to use tools such as a border for my masthead, dropping an image onto my writing. What I gaged from looking at other magazines for my masthead is that the font is massive so i increased the size. I also i learnt how to make it more attractive to attract more attention, through font size and colour so i made sure i used a bod colour for my music magazine (gold).
Using the feedback from my primanary task I increased the size of the font making it easier for the audience to read, however because I did not included a main cover line for my college magazine when using it for my Hip Hop magazine i made sure the font was bigger that the other cover lines, this made it easier to identify as the main. Another way to identify the main cover line which i included was to put it to one side and the other cover lines on the other side, i also could of made it another colour. In my college magazine i used one font size however with my Hip Hop music magazine i used a variety but no more than three -the smallest was for the price and date, medium cover lines and biggest masthead. The spacing between the cover lines are the same distance apart and from the edge of the magaine i ensured to do this as it is more professional. In my primlinary task i was criticized for having my cover lines over my model so I made sure that the only on that covered her was the main one which was about her I went as far as to copy her head and past it over the masthead, many magazines do this too. I was also criticized for writing too much for my cover lines so i ensured that i didn't write too much for my music magazine.
I also learnt some key conventions of magazines which i did not know when making my college magazine for example, including the date so i made sure to include it in my Hip Hop music magazine.
Before i didn't pay too much attention to my model as to her stance or outfit and what it represented, so for my music magazine i made sure i knew why i was dressing my model the way i did and who it would attract.
With my plimary task my photography was done with a iphone camera, this ment that the quality of the picture and lighting was not that good so to improve this for my music magazine i ensured to book a slot for the photo shoot so i could make the lighting how i wanted it and use a canaon camera.
contents page
For my pliminary task i didn't include a background colour which made it look pain so i wouldn't attract anyone therefor for my music magazine i had to a background colour to look more interesting and it showed that it was a continuation of the front cover and as i had two contents pages i made sure that both has the same background colour. After looking at magazines i realised that they normally have two contents pages and not just one.
layout- they way my images are located is not typical for a magazine so in my Hip Hop music magazine i made sure to make the layout was ordinary to make it seem more professional.
Furthermore the quality of the images are not good and some do not link to any artices which i changed when making my final magazine
Lastly i learnt to link the images to page numbers/articles which i did not do in my college magazine
However I feel that the audience that my magazine attracts is mostly female.
