Picking Masthead with cover image
when deciding my three way colour scheme i had to consider the colour of the boarder i will use. If the boarder was pink i would use black writing and if it was black ii would of used white/back/gold wringing. When telling my class they told me that they though that the black boarder would of ben too dark but the felt it was more eye catching. One boy picked the pink boarder, this told me that i will still attract men but mostly women which was my gender targeted audience.
photo shoot
Today i took my photo shoot of my cover star, as you will see in the images below I had to adjust the lighting to suit my modes complection as the lights were too bright washing her out eventually i got the right brightness and angles. When shooting i tried to use a variety of poses however i wish i wold of tried more angles rather than just straight on or even try a different coloured backdrop. But overall i was happy with the shoot and had enough pictures.

double page spread start
Today I made a start on my double page spread. I chose this image because i like the dim lighting However i still have to include an outtro and a mini biography as this is a key convention of magazines especially when the article is an interview. Another key convention is a drop cap which i have not yet included. To suite my age target i will add her social media's. as they are digital natives so are likely to have multiple social media accounts. However i am still trying to work out the spacing as the pull quote takes up too much space therefore i can not include more question and answers. I need to include more questions as XXL's interviews are normally three pages long but mine is only one.

Cover page sketch
This is what my Final cover will look like, i haven't yet decided what colour each cover line will be but it will take time and a bit of trial and error. Right not i the "first issue !" to be in black and the background pink and the writing will be a combination of pink and black, this is if the background is white which i have planned it to be. However in the puff i may put 10 free songs to download onto itunes as it is more about a music magazine which my magazine is.
Final masthead design
This is my final masthead. I used gold because it is a special issue and in my earlier post XXL had a diamond mast head as it was their 100th issue. This shows the audience just from a glance that this issue is special some how. I have put a black border around it because it makes it stand out and because I asked some people in my class which colour boarder would look best black or pink and black won as it stands out more. It also means that I will be able to write with pink black and white as there is not a gold colour on illustrator that I will be able to use.

Questions and answers for double page spread
Intro: A young talented writer from the quiet
streets of South Woodford is the next big thing in Hip Hop. The 16 year old is
becoming notorious in her hometown and growing throughout London. Jennifer has
been writing since the young age of 8 however only perused it properly when she
turned 15, picking her GCSE she was forced to think of her future and the
career she wants she picked this, close friends having faith in her and her dream,
as most importantly she believed she could do it. Finally her parents got on board
and on Jan. 4, 2015 she was sighed to her music family-colourpop. Since then
she has been on the fast track to stardom releasing multiple singles.
Outro: Jennifer’s next concert will be in Hyde
park on May. 16 2018
What is your favourite song that you wrote?
My favourite
song has to be where are you now as it is a personal response to people who
discouraged me with my song me myself and I. In where are you now I included
some of the comments made like "wanna be pop star" and "who does
she think she is? , she wot get anywhere far" .So this song is kind of
saying I’m happy with what I am doing in life so I will continue and I wouldn't
swap it for anything in the world, it saying to look at yourself before you
look at others because a lot of them were very academically smart so they
thought that maybe i would want to be like that, of course that is a good
quality but they don't even like their courses what kind of like is a unhappy
one?
Where do you see yourself in five years?
I see
my-self with more songs, more followers/supporters and even a collab with an
established artist that has a similar style to me. But educationally
I see that I have finished my a levels with good grades hopefully, I’m not
sure if I want to go to uni or do an apprenticeship but if I do go to
uni it will be in come thing that will help me understand the Hip Hop music
industry and help with my career.
How
long have you been writing for?
I only
started writing when I was around 8/9 but I have always been
interested in rap and Hip Hop as I have always listened to Missy Elliot
who a huge inspiration especially her being a female rapper as it is a male
dominated genre so it's like, female power. My favourite song from her has to
be work it, she is just so cool! I remember when Nicky Minaj came out with her
song super base when I was 10 and I was like this is a thing so then I started
to write more. I just love expressing myself creatively having an outlet. My
song -I have a dream- was written when I was nine.
How
do you pull through negativity?
I don't even know, I just
try to ignore it but I understand not everyone can do that but I’m not even
gonna lie, like it does get to me sometimes but you can't let them see that otherwise
they will keep going, I just have to remember why I am doing what I am doing
and my goals. Success is the best revenge.
How has it been juggling school and your music career?
It is
really very hard balancing the two. School alone is tough and my school is
extra tough but it’s because they want the best for us. I am a hard worker so
putting effort into both and finding time for both can be exhausting so I take
my hat off to artist who do it.
Has your family always been supportive in terms of the career path you have chosen?
NOOO! My
mum is Latino and my dad is from Mozambique, they are strict. Very old fashion in terms
of education, well they only want the best for
me but when I first told them they didn't take me seriously till I showed them
some of my raps and emphasised this is what I want to do. So they sighed me up
with a record label and from then on they have been supportive but a bit cautious
I think because they tell me i should have a backup plan because they know the
industry is very competitive.
Who inspires your style of music?
Like I
said earlier Missy Elliot, Nickey minaj, Minem and Lady Leshurr. These
artist have some inspirational raps and the flow and speed of some of their
raps are out of this world!
What artist in general do you listen to?
I listen
to section boys, drake, french montana, Nikey Minaj, Chris Brown, just a wide
variety to be honest
Has this always been your dream?
Yes and
no. No because you know when your young and someone ask you what you want to be
and you’re like a singer! Not really thinking of the work but when I got to 10 I
was serious but people still thought I was in that child kids phase of reaching
for goals which is seen as not a proper job or unrealistic. That’s why I say
yes as well because even tho I didn't know the full implications of it,
it still interested me enough to peruse it and when I grew older, well im
still young but as I got older I only got more serious about it.
Is
there anyone you wish to do a collaboration with?
Well to
do a collab with the people who inspire me or the people I love to listen to
would be good. But if I had to pick someone now I think Nicky, she's current
not saying the others aren't, and she was the one who really made it known to
me that females can do this shit too and be sick at it.

Magazine cover page inspirations and sketch
I want my model to have a strong/powerful facial expression like Kim Kardashian in this picture.
I like how the model has her hands on her hips and looking down into the camera with a tilted had this make her look powerful and authoritative.
I also like this as this is an iconic position showing girl power which all three of the pics above show.

Photography call sheets
Unfortunately Jennifer is no longer able to be in my magazine due to her just finding out she will be in a different country from today to the 21/11/16. I was devastated to be notified on such short notice close to the deadline and already booking the studio from last week, however one of other models- Shayna Bungai will take her place.
Model for photoshoot information
The model I will use for my front cover is Jennifer Castelo. I have known her for three years and we are good friends. She has just launched her music career with a few five songs named:
-"DK" ft Jennifer Castelo
This was released one month ago with a veiwing of 936
-Justin Bieber "She"
This was also released one month ago with 1,406 views. Both of these songs are covers where she raps a few verses.
- Me myself and I
this was the first released four months ago. This is the most popular song to date as 3,763 people have watched the video. This song is available to purchase on itunes.
-Where are you now
Was written after the mockery she faced from Me Myself and I which was released one month ago with a viewing of 2,087.
-I have a dream
She wrote this song when she was 9 but it was only filmed and released last week but a large amount of 2,087 people have seen/listened to the song
The songs listed above you will be able to find all of them on her youtube account "Jennifer Castelo"
In which she has 174 subscribers. she has a following of 1,808 on instagram and 231 followers on twitter.I feel she is a perfect candidate for my first issue of Jammin not only because of her image (which suits the hip hop genre criteria) but the type of songs she produces which is motivational, inspirational also the messages that she sends to her audience about pursuing your dreams despite what anyone thinks or says. This is the same kind of message i want to send to my readers so having such a positive hip hop artist with positive music will certainly reinforce the message. She is a artist who is on a fast uprise, this is what i said i would include in my magazine. This means new up raising artist will know that they will have a chance to be a feature in Jammin

Photograph induction

Notes taken today:
* The cover star model 4-5 feet away from the backdrop because they will not be lit up well and can start to blend into the backdrop
*Bones transmitter takes photos, you put it on the camera lens, the beep it makes means the flash is ready to go
FLASHLIGHTS
* The dial is from 1-6, it is best to start on three then depending on how bright i want i can change it, however you only use six if there is a group
*The green button on the side is to test the flash
* 3 point lighting
* Soft boxes distribute the light evenly this softens and distributes the light
*The main light/ Key light shines the brightest light lighting up one side of the models face brighter than the other creating a shadow on the other side or even black that side out completely
* There is a fill light
*Back light glows at the back of the model, it also separates the model from the backdrop
CAMERA
*DSLR (Digital single lens reflex)/ SLR D7100 mmp
*The lens is 118-105, zoom in and out
*A+S button (a= aperture priority s=shutter priory ) This controls exposure to shots, shadow depth of feild- this is having very small zones of focus (the smaller the f number the larger the aperture and visa versa)
*Shuttle priority allows you to take pictures with movement so if you want your models hair moving or them jumping the quality will still be good. For this it was advised to use a quick shutter (so i will have to put the high number visa versa)
*WB (white balance)- the camera removes unrealistic color casts, this is so things that are white in person will be translated on camera
*The film speed that was recommended as 150 the range that the camera was from 100 to 200. The higher the speed the more light you allow to enter the lens
*The buttons A + AF is auto focus while M is Manual focus (twist anti clockwise to zoom in and clockwise to zoom out)
*To change it from black and white (monochrome)press menu then the green camera icon which is second down, then press set picture control which is a clock after that press vivid (colour)

Magazine Proposal
Genre of my magazine
I chose Hip Hop because it is my favourite genre of music. I
have been listening to it since I was young so I am familiar with artist of
this genre. This means for my double page spread it will be easy to write
artist. I love the vibe/ feel of the music and it puts me in a good mood if I
am feeling down.
Hip Hop was formed during the early 1970s by African-American
in New York City. DJ
Kool Herc is credited as being highly influential in the pioneering stage of
hip hop music. Hip-hop music became popular outside of the African-American
community in the late 1980s. It focused on emceeing (or MCing),
breakbeats, and house parties.
Title of my magazine
I chose the title Jammin as this Fits the Hip
Hop genre. Hip Hop is something you “Jam” to.
After analysing titles of Hip Hop genre magazines, I came to
the conclusion that the majority were named had the name because it described
Hip hop ( Two magazine shows this is: “complex” and “Ego Trip”) as well as the
artist( “2DOPEBOYZ”, “King” and “Respect”), the connotations with a Hip Hop
music (“rap-up” and ”vibe”)and stereotypes of people who listen to Hip Hop.
Names of Hip Hop Magazines:
· 2DOPEBOYZ
· Complex (magazine)
· Ego Trip (magazine)
· The Fader
· Hip Hop Connection
· Hip Hop Weekly (magazine)
· Hip Hop World Magazine
· Hype (magazine)
· Juice (magazine)
· King (magazine)
· Nation19
· Pound (magazine)
· Rap-Up
· Respect. (magazine)
· Scratch (magazine)
· URB (magazine)
· Vibe (magazine)
· VIBE Vixen
· Word Up! (magazine)
· XXL
(magazine)
Context
My Hip Hop magazine will be like a traditional one however this
will be aimed to empower women to be successful like men. Women in my magazine
will not sell just because of looks but achievements. They will not be
sexualised. By doing this it will become my USP (Unique Selling Point) as no
Hip Hop Magazine does this.
I will include
articles like the top 10 Hip Hop songs; this will be updated every week and
will be a continued series of article.
New up coming artist. Any new talented artist that have just
started in the Hip Hop music.
Interviews with successful artist. This could be about
anything from their concerts, their experience
Autobiographies, how Hip Hop artist got to the point they
are, they do not have to be with just established Hip Hop artist but start up
ones too.
Adverts, this will include fashion, perfume and jewellery.
The adverts will be aimed at women and men however more women as I feel like in
many Hip Hop music magazines it is targeted towards men.
Design features
I will use the same conventions as a Hip Hop magazine however,
my masthead will be a bold unisex colour that is not red as many magazines have
it therefor it will not stand out and catch peoples eye. This is important as
my magazine will be paperback, so if I distribute it through shops there will
be lots of competition.
The lettering will be big to catch the attention of people
who are walking by. All the magazines use a big font, so by me doing it will
look like a typical professional Hip Hop magazine. On my issue there will be a
variety of fonts that compliment each-other this will make it more interesting
and appealing.
I want the colour scheme of my first issue to be a
combination of colours that represent both genders and has connotations of
positive things. This will subconsciously give the reader good feelings about
the magazine so they will purchase it again.
Publisher
I would want Townsquare Media to
publish my magazine as they already publish 3 Other Hip Hop music magazines,
which are all well known and established (KING, XXL, Boombox). This shows that
they understand what they are doing and how to increase sales because they have
so much experience (It was established in by Terry Jacobs in 1994).
Target Audience
Age: 20, I
chose this age because at this age they are still young so are very impressionable also seeing
successful people would motivate them to peruse
their dreams and goals.
Career:
Hairdresser/ Rapper
Annual
Income:$23,120($45,840)/N/A
Magazine:
Hip Hop and Fashion
Blog:
Hip Hop and Fashion
Guru:
Nicky Minaj/ Drake
Level
of Education: Degree/ High school graduate
Ethnicity:
African American
Location:
Kingston Massachusetts
Amount
of children: 0
Relationship
Status: Single
Having
all this information and being so specific on the person I’ m catering to will
help me design and make my Hip Hop Music Magazine. This increases sales as you
understand the customer so well you know what they need and want so when you
put it into your magazine they will buy it. In addition this group of people purchase
Hip Hop Magazines the most according to the media kit for XXL and VIBE.
